Tenali Ramakrishna (born Garlapati Ramakrishnayya; also known as Tenali Rama or Tenali Raman) was an Indian poet, scholar, thinker and a special advisor in the court of Sri Krishnadevaraya who ruled from C.E. 1509 to 1529. He was a Telugu poet who hailed from what is now the Andhra Pradesh region, generally known for the folk tales which focus on his wit. He was one of the Ashta diggajas or the eight poets at the court of Krishnadevaraya, the Vijayanagara emperor.
In the kingdom of Vijayanagara lived a man named Morya. He was regarded very unlucky by the people of the town. They believed that if they saw him first thing in the morning, their entire day would be cursed and they would not be able to eat anything throughout the day.
This story reached the king. So He invited Morya to his palace to understand the truth. He asked to arrange Morya’s stay in the palace next to his room. The next morning, the king without meeting anyone, went to Morya’s room first to see his face.
In the afternoon, the king sat down for lunch, but could not eat anything since there was a fly sitting in his plate. He ordered the cook to prepare lunch for him again. By the time, lunch was prepared, Krishnadevaraya did not feel like eating anymore.
Since he was empty stomach, he could not concentrate on his work. He realised that whatever the people said about Morya was indeed true. Thus he decided that a jinxed man like Morya did not deserve to live and ordered his soldiers to hang him.
After coming to know about her husband’s punishment, Morya’s wife went to seek Tenali Raman’s help.
The next morning, when the soldiers were taking Morya to hang him, they met Tenali Raman on the way. Tenali whispered something in Morya’s ears. When the guards asked Morya for his last wish, he said that he wanted to send a note to the king.
The king read the note in which it was written that if seeing my face, one loses his appetite for food all day, then a person seeing king’s face, first thing in the morning is destined to lose his life. So then who was more cursed – he or the king?
The King understood what Morya meant and ordered the guards to set him free.
Morya and his wife thanked Tenali Raman and praised him for his intelligence.
